An Intelilight™ Premium Installation Case Study
The City of Huntington Beach, CA
When the City of Huntington Beach, CA, also known as Surf City, USA, decided to look for energy efficient LED lighting to light their popular downtown entertainment district, they needed to look no further than Sternberg Lighting.
Sternberg Lighting, in conjunction with a premier controls company had just the solution the city wanted; energy-efficient decorative acorn LED fixtures with innovative adaptive control system technology that fit the city's downtown lighting requirements.
As stated by Aaron Klem, Huntington Beach city energy project manager, “We looked to LED lighting to improve the quality of light in these high traffic areas, yet the reduction in maintenance costs coupled with longer service life and potential for field controllable dimming are benefits that can't be ignored.”
Huntington Beach opted for the Intelilight™ Premium solution. Sternberg Lighting and a local controls company worked closely together to provide a solution that is a premier example of “state of the art” adaptive streetlighting.
In late 2010, Sternberg Lighting installed 42 A850SRLED's in warm 3500K color temperature on main street between Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Street utilizing a wireless controller system. The 96 watt LED Acorns replaced existing 150HPS prismatic acorns that were drawing 188 total system watts each. Right out of the gate the City of Huntington Beach was able to realize 50% energy savings even if they were to run at 100% full power.
FLEXIBILITY Surf City, USA - Huntington Beach, CA, the west coast surf mecca for more than 8 million annual visitors, is host to a wide variety of events drawing crowds annually to this well known destination; from “surf city nights” to “U.S. Open of Pro Surfing”; the city is now well-positioned to adapt to changing pedestrian and traffic conditions in its downtown area.
HOLIDAYS
Retail shops and restaurants take a front seat during the busy holiday season, and the City of Huntington Beach adjusts light levels accordingly to promote a safe - well lit environment during peak shopping and dining hours.
Sternberg Lighting was able to provide the City of Huntington Beach, CA the following:
- The city was able to save energy and provide increased safety by varying streetlight levels based on level of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- To maximize energy savings, the city standard light level is 70% lumen output, with an increase to 90% on weekends. Then up to 100% after 12:30am on the weekends. From 4am to 7am the light level would be approximately 40%.
- The 70% lumen output provides adequate lighting and one of the best compliments received is that the difference in lighting, including the use of LED is unnoticeable, yet the pedestrian comments point to a better feeling of place and sense of safety.
- Light levels are controlled both by city hall and the police department in the event of an emergency situation, such as, accidents, an amber alert or other situation.
- Green Solution – all Sternberg luminaires are completely RoHS compliant, free of any heavy metals, lead and/or mercury. They are made from 100% recyclable material.
- Sternberg Lighting luminaires are “Made in America” and meet ARRA requirements.
- The A850SRLED “Old Town Series” fixtures carry a 7-year limited warranty, backed by a company that's been in business for almost 90 years and has a strong track record of longevity with municipalities across the country.
